The first four samples below are from “The Illustrated Atlas of the Human Body” by Beverly McMillan and published by Weldon Owen. All images and spreads were completed as a team at Argosy Publishing | Visible Body. My contributions are described with each image.

Senses: The Brain

Responsibilities included modeling the nerves, eyes, and limbic system; procedural textures and lighting, and placing labels. I provided all render passes to the team for the final compositing in Photoshop. This image is based on geometry from the Visible Body.

Muscle Structure

An exploded view of a muscle. Responsible for models and ensuring anatomical accuracy. Final bitmaps and insets were created by other team members.

Artery and Vein Comparison

A comparison of the structure of a vein and artery. This is an element for Weldon Owen’s Anatomy Atlas. Responsibilities included ensuring accuracy, and creating and unwrapping the geometry. I created preliminary materials and rough bitmaps. Final bitmaps and compositing were performed by other members of the team.

Sperm Cell for Weldon Owen

This was an element for a page on the reproductive system.

Responsible for all aspects of this image, from research to final render.

Lateral Azygos View

A lateral view of the Azygos system. The models are based on those from the Visible Body, an interactive app that I worked on for about 6 years.

The models were created by a team; however, I was responsible for the modeling of all veins, arteries, nerves, lymph vessels, and the entire digestive system. Muscle geometry was already partly established and I was responsible for rebuilding many of them and ensuring correct origin and insertion points. I assisted in creating bitmaps.

Sharklet prevents Biofouling

This piece is a digital recreation and expansion of figures from Impact of engineered surface microtopography on biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus from 2007 by Cheung et al.

The intent was to augment existing visuals. This image compares a Staphylococcus aureus colonization on a flat surface with the microtextured Sharklet surface at varying levels of magnification and different perspectives.

Nucleosome

This is a representation of a Protein Data Bank entry for a Nucleosome. The nucleosome is made up of 8 histone proteins surrounded by DNA. This image was created with the external tachyon renderer from Visual Molecular Dynamics and composited in Photoshop.

Collaboration with Shoemaker Medical. Client provided geometry. Responsible for lighting, texturing, and animation-except for close-up of the screw entering bone.

Wyeth Factor IX

Treatment for Hemophilia developed via recombinant factor manufacturing. Cells are grown that create a specific protein (Factor IX). Faxtor IX is then purified through column chromatography and filtration.

Responsible for all aspects of sections containing Factor IX (46 seconds - 1:44)

Visible Body Enhanced: Short Tutorial

The Visible Body is an international award-winning app. Presented here is a version from ~2011, one of the last releases I had significant contributions to. I was involved in the creation of the anatomy, oversaw it’s accuracy, helped with UI/UX design, and ultimately was the Senior Content Developer on the project. All vasculature, nerves, and lymphatic system were modeled; except the heart and the brain. The muscular and skeletal systems were already existing, but each and every piece of geometry was modified in some way. (e.g. all origins and insertions.)

My role included the selection and oversight of the structures being created, developing a hierarchy and categorization of the anatomy, writing or proofreading all definitions and quiz questions, and creating the pre-defined views for presenting specific regions of anatomy.

My involvement in the creation of the application ended in 2012.
